Both folkwaysAlive! and the Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology organize concerts, workshops and other events. In addition, we engage in special projects and research with funding from various sources, including the University of Alberta.

Here are some projects we’ve done in the past:

  • * The first CD collaboration between folkwaysAlive! at the University of Alberta and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings: Classic Canadian Songs from Smithsonian Folkways. Featuring Cree songs to square dances, the sounds collected here were handed down by the Aboriginal peoples of Canada as well as by immigrants from France, England, Scotland, Ireland, the United States, northern Europe, and Asia. Initially released on Folkways Records during the 1950s and 1960s, the thirty tracks on the CD include a Cree greeting song, a Nootka farewell, a Newfoundland fishing ditty, a Quebecois square dance, an Alberta homesteader’s ballad, an Irish fiddle reel, a jubilee for black Loyalists in Nova Scotia, a Yiddish children’s song, and moose and bear calls.

Stocks little changed as investors assess earnings

NEW YORK (AP) Stocks were little changed Wednesday as investors pored over the latest batch of company earnings reports. IBM dropped after its revenue fell short of what analysts were expecting. Luxury goods maker Coach slumped after reporting a lower quarterly profit. Eastern time. AMONG THE GAINERS: TE Connectivity jumped $3.90 or 7.1 percent, to $60.27 after the electronics company reported earnings that beat analysts’ expectations and posted a strong earnings outlook for the second quarter. Norfolk Southern climbed $3.93, or 4.43 percent, to $92.62 after the rail company said its fourth quarter profit rose 24 percent.
